Welcome fitting for heroes
By MUSARIKE ANANGAI
The champion PNG Under 15 cricket team returned home to Port
Moresby yesterday to a rousing welcome at the Jackson's
International Airport.
A big crowd made up of family members, friends and PNG Cricket
board officials with welcome banners embraced, cheered and placed
leis on the ten players, coach Seura Lou, manager Oala John Rarua
and umpire Clive Elly.
Three players, captain Charles Amini Jr, Lakani Seura and batsman
Lega Siaka were named in the team of the tournament.
Siaka had scored an unbeaten 50 runs against Fiji in round three,
Amini Jr got a hat-trick of wickets (3/12), also against Fiji,
while Seura got a hat-trick playing against the Cook Islands in
round two of the matches played in Apia, Samoa.
Coach Seura said that he was proud of the boys' achievement
although he was worried when they lost to Vanuatu in the fourth
round. Against Vanuatu he said "we batted very well (fourth round)
scoring 109 runs but it was little errors in our fielding that let
us down".
He said he pulled the boys together after that match and told them
to forget about the loss and concentrate on winning the remaining
matches.
The PNG team did just that, winning the rest of their matches
beating Vanuatu in the final to win back to back ICC EAP under 15
titles. PNG won the title in Melbourne in 2005.
