Tigers set to claw way up
By WENDY KATUSELE
IT is last ditch efforts in Lae
women's softball as last season's grand finalist Telikom take on
Taubman Tigers in the preliminary finals set for Saturday at the
Sir Ignatius Kilage Stadium.
In the men's, Burma Raiders face Admiralty Marlins to see who
meets Island Salvage Manolos in the grand final.
The do-or-die encounter is expected to draw a bumper crowd with
the two teams raring to go to secure a grand final appearance
against defending champion Manolos next weekend.
For Telikom it had be a rough ride this season but they had stuck
to their winning form at the right time and their close win over
newcomers Kabiu in the minor semi final meant they could not miss
out on their journey to another premiership decider.
Pacific Games training squad member Vivian Yawing, who has picked
up form, will again been relied on to take charge of the pitching
mound as the national club runner-up heads for another big show
down.
Catcher Mary Stevens will again call the shots from behind the
home plate with the assistance of first base custodian and former
international Shirley Kori, second base Claire Augwi, third base
Carol Yawing and Carol Kori at short stop and the outfield
department should do likewise with Jane Siaguru, Nerriel Murup and
Ursula Wanana stop balls that come their way.
Telikom boast yet a bunch of sluggers with the Yawing sisters
Vivian and Carol, Kori sisters Carol and Shirley, Augwi and
Siaguru to lead their batting onslaught.
Player/coach Carol Yawing said training had been good and believed
her girls have stuck to a winning combination that should have the
tide their way.
Despite Tigers having the edge over Telikom after a drawn match in
the first round and a win in the second, Telikom have vowed to
erase those bitter memories.
Tigers have recruited well this season and have a score to settle
by equaling their male counterpart's record that has placed them a
force in the competition.
They had no answer to Manolos in the major semi final and a avenge
performance should allow them a premiership appearance.
Tigers will depend on again the Manai combination of pitcher
Tarsie and younger sibling
