Committed Caspar
gets his award
By KEVIN PAMBA
Commitment to work pays. That's what
Caspar Bass, the head of grounds staff at Divine Word University
in Madang, realized when he walked away with a cheque of K2000
recently.
Bass was rewarded by the University through its annual Community
Service Awards announced at the beginning in late January. The
award was launched in 2005 and inaugurated in 2006 and is awarded
at the beginning of each academic year. The Community Service
Awards are in three categories - Staff, Department and Faculty.
Bass won the staff award beating other ancillary staff, academics
and administration staff.
The inaugural winner of the staff award in 2006 was Br Hugo Andrey,
another equally committed staffer who is credited for much of the
timely transportation of staff, students and visitors to and from
campus among other chores he commits himself to.
Bass was selected among other nominees for his tireless efforts to
keep the picturesque Madang campus beautified all-year-round with
his gang of grounds staff.
A surprised Bass when receiving the award at the DWU staff mess
said he is committed to the university and will continue his
service to the institution. Bass from remote Kaiam along the
border of Madang and East Sepik provinces has been with
institution for 38 since its pioneering days as the Catholic High
School.
The Department Award of K5000 went to the Information Technology
(IT) Services Department for their dedicated service in ensuring
the IT service needs of the university community were met. The IT
Services Department stood out for their ability to meet all
requests for service in the thickness of their heavy work demand
in a University that is going big time into the procurement and
use of hi-tech facilities.
The Faculty prize of K10,000 once again went to the Faculty of
Business and Management. The faculty won the prize for the second
consecutive year. They were rewarded for their trend-setting
"adopt a community" project where they have provided service in
the form advice and mentoring to two Catholic Church parishes in
Madang town. The Faculty of Business and Management adopted the
Jomba and Holy Spirit parishes and assisted them in community
empowerment projects to be self-reliant and product citizens.
President of DWU, Fr Jan Czuba SVD, has continued to urge staff
members to do their best in what they were doing and be counted.
Fr Czuba has said that anybody can win the awards as long as they
do their best in what they are capable of while working at the
university.
The Community Service Awards are an incentive of the Divine Word
University to recognize the efforts of staff, departments and
faculties in their service to the community during an academic
year.
Service to the community is part of the vision of the university.
