THE last episode of ‘PNG Gardener at
Bulolo’ which featured on EMTV (March 3), was really captivating. Justin Tkatchenko gave a wonderful presentation into the nature and trend of developments in Bulolo, beginning with the colonial-era alluvial mine to the present state, and the historical involvement of PNG Forest Products (PNGFP) as the chief agent of change within the area. As an outsider from another province, it was amazing to learn and acknowledge the immense contribution PNGFP has made to the area, in terms of services provided and employment for locals throughout its expansion and diversification over the decades. With a carefully planned long-term development strategy, the company has successfully integrated environmental restoration measures such as its reforestation practices. That truly indicates that the company is genuinely concerned about the future and not just the present, compared to others that have adversely affected our virgin rainforests and left permanent scars on our land. The programme, while highlighting key areas of the company’s operations and its products, also covered other significant establishments such as the Wau Microbank, tourism and recreational spots, the beautiful natural scenery, the Butterfly ranch and the upcoming mining project. The show was so interesting I wished it had gone on for a little longer. Thanks to PNGFP for sponsoring the spectacular episode and the Happy Gardener himself. “You are too good indeed.” Siks Tedi Kange, Port Moresby |
