| Guard killed trying to save shop assistant | |
|
By PETER MIVA A SECURITY guard in Lae who tried to save a female shop assistant from being attacked by criminals, died after he was stabbed. The guard from Tight Security Company was on duty at the Pelgens’ supermarket in Chinatown last Friday when armed robbers tried to take a female employee captive. Metropolitan commander Chief Supt Nema Mondiai said yesterday that the gang of about seven youths armed with home-made guns and knives entered the supermarket at 3.30pm. Mr Mondiai said the suspects threatened the staff members inside the shop and allegedly removed four packets of Pall Mall cigarettes. He said before the gang could lay their hands on other goods, the guard sprung on one of the gangsters who had tried to hold a female worker captive. Mr Mondiai said other members of the gang stabbed the guard in his stomach and thighs. He died on the way to the hospital from loss of blood. He said the identity of the deceased was withheld until his relatives were informed. Mr Mondiai said the suspects fled into the Bumbu settlement. In another armed robbery, about six youths armed with four home-made guns walked into the Leanne’s bakery store at the main market area and held up the staff members and security guards and stole an estimated K10,000 in cash last Saturday afternoon. Mr Mondiai said the suspects also stole the store manager’s car after grabbing the keys and escaped at around 3.45pm. He said the gang drove to Malaita street, Papuan Compound and abandoned the vehicle and fled on foot. Police recovered the vehicle later in the afternoon. |
