Sir Michael made special reference
to support the second PM’s Golf Challenge in Lae on May and the
auctioning of Trukai Fun Run T-shirts scheduled for March 26 in Lae and
March 27 in Port Moresby. The Lae Fun Run auction will be held at Huon Club in Lae and Royal Papua Yacht Club in Port Moresby. Sir Michael took part in the golf challenge in Port Moresby last Friday and thanked Boroko Motors as the major sponsor of the event, as well as other supporting sponsors. He said he hoped to raise K109,000 from the Friday to send Team PNG to the Beijing Olympic Games in August. He said that through MRDC his government had made available K5 million to develop, train and prepare athletes for the South Pacific Games in Samoa last year and for the Beijing Games this year. PNG Sports Federation general secretary Sir John Dawanincura said his office aims to raise K450,000 to send the team to Beijing. He said this year, a record 54 teams participated in the golf challenge. “We already have three athletes who have qualified on merit to take part in the Beijing Olympics – swimmer Ryan Pini has qualified in the 100-metre butterfly and 100m freestyle, Mae Kome in the 100m sprint and Theresa Tona in the 49kg division for taekwando,” Sir John said. Two other sports judo and weightlifting have their Oceania qualifiers in Auckland this month and boxing in Samoa in April. Both men and women soccer failed to make the plane to Beijing after finishing fourth in men’s qualifier in Lautoka Fiji and losing to New Zealand Ferns 2-nil in Port Moresby. Sir John thanked Sir Michael for this patronage for the past 10 years. He also thanked Boroko Motors for their contribution of K20,000 and also the Mitsubishi Sportero L200 for the Hole In One at the 18th hole. |
