All is not well in Unitech PARENTS and sponsors of all Unitech students and all stakeholders must be advised that all is not well here in Lae. The academic year is not progressing well as there is no cooperation within the major stakeholders of the university, especially between the administration and the student and academic staff. The administration refuses to listen to students and staff’s grievances. All that they are doing is giving orders to comply or else face harsh penalties including termination. A number of students have been expelled for exercising their grievances in a peaceful and professional manner late last year. The Student Representative Council (SRC) was disbanded last year for allowing students to stand up for their right. This year, we do not have a SRC. The executives of the National Academic Staff Association (NASA) have been evicted from the campus like criminals a month ago for taking the lead in the war against corruption, mismanagement and maladministration. Most of the national staff have been terminated and many are resigning daily as they felt cheated and mistreated. We are running out of lecturers. – Unitech student, Lae Chancellor must accept blame IT is time for the Unitech chancellor to accept blame for his incompetence and hand over reins to the interim board as appointed by the NEC through the Minister for Higher Education. His rein has seen so much deterioration of academic standard and general order in the campus. I see no logic in his efforts to sabotage the much anticipated move by the minister. A senior person like him should not have any problems in differentiating between ethics, moral values, integrity and failure. He has failed to live up to his promises to look into pressing matters such as staff recruitment and general improvement. We have lost our trust in him. In my opinion, he must step aside for the sake of the institution, students and staff, stakeholder and his integrity. – Komodore Dracko, via email Road is a good start I APPLAUD the move by Wapenamanda member Miki Kaeok to rebuild an alternate road as reported in January. The road, for which K2 million has been allocated, will help the people living in the Lower Lai constituency of Wapenamanda and Baiyer Lumusa district of Western Highlands. We have been left behind for too long in terms of basic government services. The road will boost the local economy and improve the people’s livelihood. – King Charkey Itox, Madang Better days ahead THE visit by the Australian prime minister last week was an important event and marks the beginning of a new era in the bilateral relations between the two countries. The visit signalled Kevin Rudd is prepared to put aside differences brought about by the past Liberal government and work towards re-establishing and strengthening the bilateral relations. PNG stands to gain in this relationship. Not only is PNG improving its relations with Australia but the Solomon Islands too. Its PM, upon coming into power, immediately reviewed his country’s diplomatic relationship with Australia and quickly moved to send Moti back to Australia. Pacific island countries must learn from each other and put to maximum use the resources and all the assistance that Australia has to offer. – Bomai D Witne, Goroka Revive Ialibu league IALIBU has produced many rugby league players but unfortunately, the league there ceased three years ago and those elected to run the PNGRFL do not seem to care. I am sure many people want the Ialibu league to be revived and I call upon individuals and groups to do something about it. We can then hope to see more Raymond Karls, Nande Yers, David Glipus, Francis Pegus, and Jussie Joe Parkers. – Rama Graham, Lae Disrespect becoming a culture Disrespect for our fellow brothers and sisters in PNG is becoming a culture. This is no surprise as the grassroots are merely following what our leaders are doing in Parliament. There is no outburst in Parliament over disrespect of humans lives and grave injustice that happens in everyday on our streets. – Gawac Nga2, Brisbane |
