Remote Andita back on the map
THE people of Andita in the Porgera/Paiela district of Enga province are now, for the first time in many years, able to travel to Porgera in comfort to do business.
They can now travel in PMV buses and trucks to sell their garden produce in markets and do other business in Porgera.
The big change follows the reconstruction of the run-down Paiela road from the Waile Creek turn-off near Porgera to Andita Village in Paiela, covering a distance of approximately 23km.
The Porgera Joint Venture, in its strive to provide better infrastructure development in the remote parts of Porgera/Paiela, had committed K2.5 million to reconstruct this road.
Work on the road started in July last year and has been carried out in two stages. The first covered a distance of 5km from the Waile Creek turn-off to the Aiyoko Road turn-off.
The second stage, which was just completed, is from Aiyoko to Andita, a distance of about 18km.
The PJV’s Communities and Environment Group, through its Community Affairs department funded this project as part of its community relations activities to work closely with and assist the people.
Officials from the Communities and Environment Group including manager Tim Omundsen, acting Community Affairs manager Simon Thomas, superintendent of Community Relations in Porgera/Paiela Roland Allbrook and other senior nationals visited the site recently to see how work was progressing.
