PRIME Ministers Kevin Rudd of
Australia and Helen Clark of New Zealand have congratulated Sir Michael
Somare on his 40 years in politics. Mr Rudd said in an open letter to Sir Michael that March 13th marks a special moment in the history of PNG when 40 years ago, Sir Michael first sat as an elected representative of his people. He said Sir Michael’s contribution to PNG has ensured him a unique place in the region. “I look forward to continuing to work with Sir Michael on the many matters that bring our two countries together and make us such firm friends. “He has led his country several times, serving longer in that role than any other Papua New Guinean, and receiving numerous honours for his achievements. Now, on the 40th anniversary of his parliamentary career, he is one of the longest serving parliamentarians anywhere in the world,” Mr Rudd said. “I first had the privilege of meeting the Chief when I visited Papua New Guinea to walk the Kokoda Track in April 2006. As Prime Minister, I was honoured to meet him again in Bali last December, and to visit Papua New Guinea as his guest only last week. During that visit, I was proud to start a new page with him in Australia’s bilateral relationship with Papua New Guinea, launching vital new initiatives for our common good,” Mr Rudd said. Ms Clark said Sir Michael’s was certainly an achievement to be proud of. She said throughout the 40 years, New Zealand has enjoyed a close relationship with Papua New Guinea and looked forward to continuing and deepening that relationship. She also noted Sir Michael’s important contributions to the Pacific regional politics, in particular in the South Pacific Forum. |
