8,000 teachers face the axe from payroll

MORE than 8,000 teachers in PNG face the axe from their payroll.

This would happen in the next pay day if they do not submit their resumption duty summary sheets to the Education Department in Waigani.
The department secretary Dr Joseph Pagelio said yesterday that 8,O76 teachers out of 38,643 registered nation-wide face being dropped from the payroll.
The teachers are from primary, high, secondary and vocational schools including lecturers teaching at in-service colleges.
Dr Pagelio early this week, informed all provincial education Advisors to ensure teachers’ forms were forwarded to the Education headquarters to avoid unnecessary suspension of teachers from the payroll, which could disrupt classes.
He said by law, all teachers are required to complete the “resumption of duty forms” on the first day of school.
The resumption forms are then verified and endorsed before they are sent to the payroll branch to register that the teacher has actually taken up duty on the position he or she was appointed to.
Dr Pagelio added that teachers suspended from the payroll would be placed back on the payroll upon receipt of their resumption of duty summary forms.
