Some lecturers deserved to go
THIS is the other side of the coin that not many are aware of. If you were to come to Unitech to conduct a survey, you would find the reasons given by the
lecturers who quit were one-sided. Some students would reveal that some lecturers do not turn up for class on time, ill-minded, busy with other matters apart from their contractual duties, drunk, and accept bribes or sexual favours to upgrade (female) students’ grades, etc. Some of these lecturers were regularly being disciplined. Others who were sent overseas for further studies refused to come back after completing their studies as they were offered jobs there. Some
lecturers failed to have their contracts renewed because of reasons above. Parents, stakeholders and the public should be aware that there is another reason for the lecturers’ resignations. In a way, Unitech is ensuring there is quality and standard. – Silent truth observer, Lae

Sick of corruption

AS a student, I am sick with the widespread corruption in Unitech. I hope the authorities will take concrete steps to ensure that it will be contained and exterminated on and for all. – Megusa beast, Lae

Where are Hela MPs?

I SUPPORT the Hela region United church bishop Rev Wai Tege calling on Hela MPs to ensure essential and basic services are provided to the people. It is a shame to hear that Hela people are living in darkness for the last two months and the hospital has to carry out surgeries using candles. How can government institutions like hospital operate if the building is rotting and its roof leaking? While the rest of the country is moving ahead, Hela is making do with buildings erected during the colonial era. The so-called MPs talking about funding big projects must get their priorities right. Come home and see for yourselves the situation instead of spending time Port Moresby, Lae or Madang. The people have given you the mandate. – Halukay Manu, Madang

Well done, Nomane Raiders

I WOULD like to congratulate the A Grade team of Nomane Raiders rugby league club for their superb win in the preliminary finals of the Boroko off season rugby league competition. The win was sweet as the Nomane Raiders team do not have any star players. Instead, they relied on their brilliant football skills and endurance. The Nomane Raiders have shown their capability. Keep up the good display in the semi-finals. – Davies Kia, Club president

Block internet pornography

THERE have been reports of rapes, incest, adultery, fornication, carnal knowledge, production of pornography, prostitution, HIV/AIDS and the list goes on in PNG. One wonders why there is an increase in these activities recently. It is hard to find the main cause. Most of us blame nightclubs; unemployment and poverty, rural-urban migration, and influence of alcohol and drugs. However, could it also be due to exposure to internet pornography? Recent research reveals a high number of people engaging in such activities after their frequent exposure to internet pornography and TV violence. The PNG Government now must seriously address internet pornography and introduce some form of control. Internet providers in PNG should be advised to install filtering or blocking systems to prevent would-be website abusers from accessing pornography. – Concerned person, Adelaide, South Australia

Give A$13m to NGOs, churches

Australia is the single largest source of funds for HIV initiatives in PNG. While about 90% of funding for HIV initiative comes from donors, 95% of that is from Australia. The PNG Government budgets only K2.3 million per year for HIV activities and without mainstream health services. NGOs and church-based organisations have demonstrated a significant level of awareness. They have had considerable training and have greater knowledge. I would recommend that the additional A$13 million that was promised by Australian prime minister, Kevin Rudd be forwarded to the NGOs, private sectors and church-run organisations because they are transparent and have a history of doing a better job. – Frank Goi, Newcastle, Australia
