| Five criminals dash for freedom | |
|
By ELIZABETH VUVU FIVE hardcore criminals from the Kerevat Correctional Service in East New Britain dashed for freedom while at a work party in the nearby Kerevat River. ENB police said the prisoners, seeing there was only one warder guarding them, made their escape. The incident occurred last Friday at about noon and the matter was reported to police only at about 7.30pm. Police made an urgent appeal to the public to be cautious and take extra care when moving around, as all of the escapees were serving time at the jail for serious crimes such as armed robbery, holdups and break-and-enter. Police said the escapees had been classified as “high risk” and with their escape, could cause more problems to the community, thus making police search impossible. Police have identified the escapees as Renson Papalum, Eddie Mikes, Simon Guai, Camilus Apelis and Steward “Skull” Wani, all in their mid 20s. Police have appealed to the public to assist with information that would help them know the whereabouts of the escapees. Meanwhile, an escapee, who was jailed for the wilful murder of a prominent businessman in Rabaul, was captured by police yesterday morning after escaping recently. Police on patrol located him in the Kenabot residential area and in his attempts to escape, he was shot on his two ankles and admitted to Vunapope Hospital. Police have called for the voluntary surrender of the escapees to avoid being shot. |
