PNG golf wins top honours
LAST year’s PNG Golf Open has been voted joint winner of the Queensland PGA Tournament of the Year 2007 Award, beating about 40 other contenders.
And to add to that, the Morobe Open came out third.
The Australian 4 Ball Pro-Am championship took the award jointly with the PNG Open.
PNG Golf Association president Stan Walker received the award in the Coast Coast, Australia recently.
“I believe that this is the first time that an event of this nature has received such a prestigious award,” said an elated tournament director Ken Dunn in Port Moresby.
“It is an enormous accolade to all those involved in organising the event, in particular the sponsors and the people of Port Moresby who, through their hospitality, make the professional golfers very welcome to PNG.
“The award reflects positively in PNG in general.”
The PNG Open 2007 was held at the Port Moresby Golf Club and attracted more than 40 professionals from Australia and New Zealand.
It was won by Andrew Bonhomme who went on to become the Sunshine Tour’s biggest prize money winner.
The Australian missed getting a tour card for the US Professional Golfers Association tour by two strokes on the final day of the qualification rounds.
This year’s PNG Open on May 8-11 will be held at the Port Moresby Golf Club again with SP Brewery as sponsors.
The organisers are expecting more than 50 professionals, including two from Malaysia, to compete for the title and prize money totalling a record A$80,000.
Preparations for the tournament have already started, which include some renovation to the clubhouse.
