Criminals in Mendi terrorise innocent folks

By ANDREW ALPHONSE
CRIMINALS are again terrorising innocent citizens and running riot in Mendi town, taking advantage of the withdrawal of the state of emergency (SoE) powers from the security forces.
This is according to Peace Foundation Melanesia, a non-governmental organisation that promotes peace and justice in the Southern Highlands province.
Provincial PFM coordinator Alois Ekape said last Thursday from Mendi after a young female teacher was robbed of K1,300 in cash, money believed to be from her pay and that of three other colleagues back at the school.
Mr Ekape, who was a witness to the incident, said the three youths from Tubiri settlement held up Silvia Anthony, a teacher at Songura Primary school in Margarima district. She was with colleagues.
He said the incident happened near Mendi airport at about 4:30pm last Wednesday.
Mr Ekape, who was escorting them to Kumin Catholic mission, was threatened with a machete-like weapon while Ms Anthony was punched on her chest and fell down unconscious.
Her other friend had the bag containing K1,300 cash after doing banking for her colleagues.
The criminals seized the bag and dashed off towards Tubiri settlement.
