TSC reps attend conference

By ALISON ANIS
THE Teaching Services Commissions (TSC) from Commonwealth member countries in the Pacific attended a two-day conference at the Holiday Inn in Port Moresby to deliberate on the quality and status of teachers in the region.
Leaders from the teaching services commission in Australia, New Zealand, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Tonga and Vanuatu including PNG met at the conference which ended last Thursday to address key issues, challenges and educational aspirations identified during the 15th Education Minister’s conference held in England in 2004.
During the conference, the ministers affirmed that education was a crucial means for adapting to a change, reducing poverty, ensuring security, improving health, and well being, enhancing economic prosperity and personal security, promoting fairness, justice and achieving environmental sustainability.
Emphasis was placed on the need to strengthen the Commonwealth education programme – toward teacher mobility, retention, recruitment and protection.
“The issue was viewed by education ministers in the Commonwealth as one of the most urgent issues that need to be addressed immediately in “closing the gap”.
