Manus to hold two polls due to timing factor

By VERONICA MANUK
MANUS province has confirmed with the Electoral Commission that it will conduct both elections separately after assessing the outcome of the mock election.
Chairman of the provincial steering committee, Wep Kanawi said he had submitted a report to the Electoral Commission in Port Moresby informing the commission that Manus will conduct the two elections, national and LLG election, separately because of the time factor.
Mr Kanawi said during the mock elections, members of the committee had sat with their watches to monitor how long voting and counting would take.
They found out that voting alone took an average of six to seven minutes and sorting out a ballot paper for counting took about one to two minutes.
Mr Kanawi said the previous voting system, first past the post, took only a minute for the people to vote for their candidate.
He said based on that assessment, the committee submitted the report to the commission to formally inform that the committee wanted separate elections.
