Volcanic ash falls around Kokopo

MOUNT Tavurvur continued to release thin to thick white grey ash clouds rising to 400m above the summit before being blown to east to southeast of the volcano.
Fine ash fall continued to occur at Kokopo and surrounding villages last Wednesday.
This was the first time since last Oct 7 eruptions that people in Kokopo and Vunapope were copping dust because only Rabaul had been experiencing ash fall.
A situation report from Rabaul Volcano Observatory said ash emission consisting of thick white grey ash cloud continued last Thursday morning that rose about 1.5km before being blown to the south over Raluana, Ialakua, Barovon villages resulting in fine ash fall.
There was no explosion recorded last Thursday, however, occasional weak to loud roaring noise were heard.
RVO said seismic activity continued to remain at a low level. Low frequency earthquakes continued to be recorded and were associated with the ash emissions.
The Global Positioning System (GPS) at Matupit Island indicated a minor subsidence since last March 12.
Mild eruptive activity was expected to continue with occurrence of occasional explosions.
