PNGDF engineering unit for SHP sought

PEOPLE in Southern Highlands province are calling on the National Government to create a Defence Force engineering detachment in the province.
The call was made last week during PNGDF commander Commodore Peter Ilau’s visit to the province.
Firmin Manua, a local leader in Mendi, relayed his people’s wish just before Commodore Ilau launched the newly-renovated Mendi market which was upgraded by the soldiers.
Mr Manua said the Southern Highlanders wanted the Defence Force engineering unit to be based in the province, after witnessing them got involved in quick impact projects (QIP) like the renovated market, the sealing of Kiburu/Mendi town road and the airport fencing.
In response, Mr Ilau said he would take their call on board and advise Prime Minister Sir Michael Somare, who is currently the Defence Minister, and “see how best the Government can respond” to their request.
Mr Ilau said at present there was a Defence Force engineering unit based in Kerowil, Western Highlands province.
Meanwhile, Southern Highlands Governor Hami Yawari promised to continue funding provincial projects and to tap the services of the Defence Force.
