Vunadidir villagers relocating

By ELIZABETH VUVU
HUNDREDS of village families in Vunadidir, East New Britain, are relocating to safer grounds following a major disaster caused by floods and soil erosion in recent weeks.
Several houses were washed away by heavy floods and up to five people were injured by landslides and falling trees.
The villagers also reported two deaths.
One man died when tonnes of eroding soil slammed into his house while another died when he was hit by a falling tree.
Davide Piamia, resident of Toma-Vunadidir local level government, was expected to provide situation report to the provincial administration and the gazelle Restoration authority (GRA) office so he could get help in relocating his people.
The villages affected are Vunadidir, Vunakabi, Raim, Tanaka and Gunanur.
Mr Piamia said soil erosion was one of the major causes of landslides and heavy flooding caused by prolonged rainy days.
While he welcomed the provincial government’s initiative to set up a soil erosion response unit (SERU), Mr Piamia urged GRA and the technical division to deploy their engineers to his area to assess the situation.
