Medical team sent to Yaneb

HEALTH Minister Sir Peter Barter has directed health authorities in Sandaun province to dispatch a medical team to treat children against reported outbreak of acute pulmonary illness in the remote Yaneb area.
Sir Peter said the outbreak was reported by the Summer Institute of Linguistics officers who are working in the area.
The minister said the health team wouild fly from Vanimo to Kwomtari airstrip with medical supplies to treat children reportedly suffering from pulmonary infections.
Earlier, plans for the medical team to walk from the Amanab Health Centre to Yanebi, was abandoned due to flooding of rivers caused by rains in the province.
Sir Peter said health officials in Vanimo were also working on establishing radio contact with the Anguganak and Ningil Health centres to verify reports of deaths resulting from malaria in the remote Nuku district.
The Sandaun provincial health adviser, Besak Drorit said medical supplies for the area were delivered to the Anguganak Health Centre at the end of last month.
Mr Drorit said the health radio system provided good communication with the remote areas where radios were working but they had not received any reports of the deaths from malaria in the Nuku area.
It was reported that three children died of malaria two weeks ago in the Sabig and other neighbouring areas.
A villager who arrived in Wewak reported that people in the area could not get treatment in time because they could not access medical supplies.
The villager said medical supplies could be obtained from the Ningil sub-health centre which was three to four hours by foot.
