Inmate gets second chance at education
By DAVID KAPI
AN inmate at the Bomana prison has been
given a second chance to complete his secondary education at De La Salle
Boys’ High School in Port Moresby.
Guy Arua, 21, from Baruni in the Central province shed tears of joy as
the school’s board chairman Rumints Siki welcomed him into the school in
an emotional ceremony at the school hall witnessed by commanding officer
of Bomana prison Chief Supt Michael Mosiri, relatives, inmates,
students, and teachers last Thursday.
Mr Siki welcomed the young man to De La Salle and praised the school’s
board of management, the Correctional Services management, especially Mr
Mosiri, and the Department of Education for their efforts in giving hope
to someone who thought he had lost everything, including a proper
education.
“I urge Arua to prove to everyone that education does not stop when one
really wants to be educated,” Mr Siki said.
Mr Mosiri said the arrangement was on a trial and error basis and that
the onus was on Arua to impress everyone involved in arranging for his
studies at the all-boys school.
“Inmates have been given a chance at education through the distance mode
of learning.
However, this is the first of its kind in PNG where an inmate will
attend a public school.
“I hope everyone involved in this will have a good story to tell,” Mr
Mosiri said.
Arua was chosen to study at the school after going through different
rehabilitation programmes offered at the Bomana prison.
