Hawks win to lead outright

By MUSARIKE ANANGAI
Bishop Brothers Hawks have regained the outright lead as former co-leaders Magani and Dobo Warriors were upstaged in the Port Moresby rugby league competition over the weekend.
Hawks did just enough to secure the two points on Saturday against a Waliya outfit that has won only once this season.
Waliya put up a good fight to go into halftime tied at 6-6 but Hawks crossed twice in the second half to win 16-10.
Magani’s four-game winning streak came to an abrupt end on Saturday going down 34-6 to Brothers.
Brothers’ victory came at the back of a brilliant defensive display while the Magani attack had an off day handing over possession cheaply through errors.
Representative fullback Joshua Poria scored two tries to enable Post PNG Puma record only its second victory this season against the Dobo Warriors yesterday.
Despite several rampaging runs by Dobo captain and prop Thomas Ninkama, a more committed Puma defense did not allow the rest of the Dobo pack to dominate like they have done in recent matches.
Added to that, poor ball security close to the Puma line cost Dobo dearly on several occasions.
Puma went ahead within the first five minutes when captain Joshua Lapa took a pass from second rower Iru Pomu, fended off one defender before scoring in the right corner.
Dobo hit back just before the 20th minute when hooker Tupis Nema scored off a short pass from Ninkama.
Poria scored his first try under the posts in the 23rd minute after taking a clever inside pass from halfback David Apet Simon metres from the tryline.
Robin Timbilisons’ leveled the scores at 10-10 from a play that started on the opposite side of the field and involved quick hands by Nema, Jamie Miul and Ninkama.
A Vali Kapa penalty immediately after the break gave Puma a two point lead.
Poria grabbed his second when he pounced on a lose ball deep in his own half, beat the attempted tackles of Thomas Kiriwai and Sylvestor Nuabo to score a runaway try.
Another Kapa penalty at the end gave Puma an 18-10 victory.
In the other round six matches, Souths and Kone Tigers drew 16-all, Royals beat Paga 20-16, Tarangau 22 beat West 14 while the Butterflies overcame Defence 34-16.
The table now sees Hawks (10), Butterflies (9), Brothers, Magani, Dobo Warriors, Royals (8), Kone Tigers (7), Tarangau, Paga (6), Puma, Souths (5), Defence, Waliya (2), West (0).
