Marlins finally landed the one that
got away
By HAIVETA KIVIA
CONSORT Shipping Admiralty Marlins finally grabbed their maiden
premiership in Lae Softball Men's A grade competition with a nail-biting
2-1 win over Island Shipping Manolos on Saturday at the Sir Ignatius
Kilagi Stadium.
The win, which came in a tie breaker after both teams were tied 1-1 all
after the compulsory seven innings, was clouded with controversy at the
bottom of the fifth and at the top of seventh innings.
The incident at the bottom of fifth inning was not disputed when Marlins
right outfielder and player of final Charles Malum belted a home run and
was circling the base home when he was slapped with high five by
assistant coach Peter Koilamas. Malum should have being ruled out and
the run cancelled.
However, Manolos failed to pick this up, nor did central umpire
Sebastine Manai and Marlins tied the score at 1-1 all.
The seventh inning incident was a mess and stalled the game for about 10
minutes. The incident arose when Manolos pinch runner Jerry Sebastine
raced home and was ruled by Manai as run scored.
Manai later rescinded his decision and ruled Sebastine out on a base
umpire's interjection. The base umpire ruled that Sebastine had taken
off before the pitch was delivered. This brought heated exchange of
words between the two sides.
The final it self was a tight affair and at the close of second innings,
the score was nil- all.
Manolos right outfielder Tony Kapil registered the first point of the
match.
He placed a bunt near his foot and raced safely to first and was
advanced by Morris Ilamia and was scored through a Michael Kalas
sacrifice hit.
Ilamia in that process was ruled out for taking off before the pitch.
Marlins tied the score through Charles Malum homer in the fifth.
After the seventh inning incident the match went into a tie breaker and,
that also ended in controversy when Manolos placed Steve Malum Jr into
the batting box when it was supposed to be Lawrence Kero.
That was solved, but Manolos failed in their attempt.
Marlins also took out the B grade premiership beating Telikom 14-8.
