| Capitalise human resource | |
|
I WOULD like to commend on the speech
by Madang Governor Sir Arnold Amet during the 26th graduation ceremony
at Divine Word University recently. His emphasis on the development and proper utilisation of human capital is what our Government has to focus on. In this era of knowledge and information system, we cannot allow ourselves to live behind the rest of the world. We must be equipped and prepared to cope with advances in science and technology. Social and economic indicators obtained from WHO showed that Papua New Guinea is rich in natural resources but still remains poor. We lack the appropriate knowledge to manage our resources well. We have the potential to become a rich nation if we maximise the output of our trained human resource. Our national universities, like Unitech, have some of the best scientists and engineers in the world. We have potential intellectuals with innovative and natural inventive abilities. An example of a nationally produced scientist would be Dr Clement Waine. But the question is how efficient and effective the Government has utilised these brains in the past years. Leaders and MPs are always preaching about facts and sweet talks but no one seem to think creatively and initiate the solutions to those problems. I believe the Government and the Higher Education Ministry should provide incentives to build more research centres and training institutions. Michael Drake Kapu, Madang |
