School census campaign launched

THE National Department of Education launched a week-long national school census awareness road show in Kavieng, New Ireland province last week.
Officials from the department and AusAID visited seven schools in Kavieng, including Utu High School along the Buluminski Highway.
The national school census week was launched in Port Moresby yesterday.
“We want to inform as many principals, head teachers, and teachers as possible about the important role they will play in filling out the forms during national school census week from today till Friday,” Uke Kombra, the first assistant secretary, policy and planning, Department of Education, said.
Officials from the department and AusAID will also visited Madang and Mt Hagen last week.
The department is targeting head teachers, teachers, students and parents to provide important information on school enrolments, teacher qualifications and student birth dates.
Information collected during National Census Week would allow the Department of Education and provincial administrations to assess progress in the sector and plan for improved education services across PNG.
“By getting information from the schools through a national school census, we’ll be reducing the number of problems encountered in the past with data collection.
“With a more accurate picture of the needs of schools, we’ll be able to plan for the next five to 10 years.
“For example, how many high schools need to be built, how many teachers need to be trained, how many curriculum materials we should be printing, and where we should be sending them,” Mr Kombra said.
The national schools census is an initiative of the PNG Government, supported by the Australian government through AusAID and Unicef.
