Man jailed 20 years for wife’s murder

A 20-YEAR-OLD man was sentenced to 20 years in jail with hard labour by the National Court in Lae last Wednesday for the wilful murder of his wife.
National Court judge Justice Nicholas Kirriwom sentenced Sido Peto, 20, from Tapini, Central province, to jail after finding him guilty of the crime.
The court heard that on Aug 18, 2004, Peto followed his wife Makeso Peto, who was on her way to the clinic with their baby, and attacked her with a sharp bush knife after suspecting her of having an affair with her uncle.
The court heard that Peto stabbed his wife several times on her chest. The knife penetrated her liver and he used other objects to fracture her skull.
The court heard that he left her dead, picked up the child and went home telling family members that his wife had been attacked by criminals and that he had found the child along the way.
Justice Kirriwom told Peto that his crime was the worst type of murder which warranted a 20-year sentence.
The judge deducted two years and 10 months, which the prisoner served while on remand.
