Mekeos back mining moratorium

CONCERNED Mekeo leaders are supporting the call from Dr Allan Marat, chairman of the Constitutional and Law Reform Commission and MP for Rabaul, for a moratorium on mining operations at Tolukuma gold mine in Central province until a tailings dam is built at the mine camp.
Fr Charley Kape, on behalf of Veifa’a community, and Gabriel Lala, former district administrator from Inawi village of Bereina, yesterday urged all church and community leaders to support the call.
They also stressed that health must come first before wealth.
In a joint statement yesterday, Messrs Kape and Lala questioned the silence of the Government and responsible institutions over the Tolukuma’s alleged poisoning of the two rivers in the mining site.
“Someone must be held responsible over this serious health hazard.
“This is blatant genocide.
“What’s keeping the tongue tied over this serious health hazard phenomena?
“Tough skins don’t seem to have goose bumps when the blood tests were 100% confirmed … terminal illnesses are eminent, gradual and slow suffering are not a laughing matter,” they said.
The leaders described the issue as a “mining genocide” that all leaders and community must fight against even if it means a legal battle.
The Mekeo leaders said as concerned contributors to National Capital District’s GST tax grants, they were disgusted with the silence by national leaders on the Tolukuma controversy.
