Prosecutor asks Chief Justice to look into charges
against Zurenuoc

THE Office of the Public Prosecutor has asked the Chief Justice to convene a leadership tribunal to inquire into allegations of misconduct in office against Finschhafen MP Guao Zurenuoc.
Acting Public Prosecutor James Pambel made the request to acting Chief Justice Sir Salamo Injia, after considering evidence provided by the Ombudsman Commission.
Mr Pambel had concluded the matter warranted him to refer the issue to a leadership tribunal.
“The Ombudsman Commission referred Mr Zurenuoc to me on Feb 27, 2006, for possible prosecution over certain breaches under the Leadership Code,” Mr Pambel said in a statement yesterday.
The allegations of misconduct levelled against Mr Zurenuoc related to his former employment as secretary for Department of Lands and Physical Planning for the period March 2000 to February 2002.
The leader was alleged to have firstly misappropriated the department’s funds totalling more than K18,000.
The second set of allegations against him involved charges that he received motor vehicle allowances totalling K50,000, while at the same time using a fully-maintained official vehicle as department head.
The last allegation related to the misuse of funds intended for the leader’s farewell party.
“The leader had been advised of my intentions to request the appointment of a tribunal,” Mr Pambel said.
