East Sepik covered by mobile phone

THE entire East Sepik province is expected to be covered by mobile telephone service early next week.
Maprik area was switched on at about 8pm on Wednesday night and Angoram is expected to be on the latest phone service by today. Yangoru people will have access to mobile phones by tomorrow evening, if not, Monday.
About 20 Telikom engineers and technicians led by project manager Simon Krahwazi, have been setting up communication towers and antennas in Maprik, Angoram, Yangoru and Mount Turu over the last seven days – apparently under pressure from Prime Minister Sir Michael Somare, Public Enterprise and Communications Minister Arthur Somare and East Sepik Governor Peter Wararu Waranaka.
The Government released about K4 million for the entire project, which commenced about a year ago with the construction of the main tower on East Sepik’s Mt Turu, ESP’s highest peak referred to by locals as Hurun.
A PNG Defence Force naval boat landed some of the heavier equipment like generator sets and antennas on Wednesday and trucks moved them into the various project sites during the week.
