Willie to Paska: Don’t use wage issue in campaign

By HARLYNE JOKU
DO not politicise the issue of 100% increase in national minimum wages and allowances.
This was the advice yesterday to PNG Trade Union Congress general secretary John Paska from Employers Federation of PNG executive director Florence Willie.
Ms Willie said the issue was long-overdue and should have been addressed by the trade union earlier.
“Why only now?”
She said it was common knowledge that Mr Paska was running for election.
“Therefore, he must not use the issue as an early campaign tool.
“Our doors are open … (Mr) Paska must come to us. It had taken him far too long to come up with his log of claims.
“We are interested in looking at his log of claims and come to a round table discussion on the issue.
“The issue has been outstanding since 2003,” Ms Willie said.
She said Employers Federation of PNG, as one of the main stakeholders, was aware of the issue and would want to assist its employees in the matter.
Ms Willie was reacting to a press statement on Sunday from Mr Paska, who said he would be presenting a log of claims to the employers federation and the Government to seek a 100% rise in the national minimum wage rate and a 100% hike in allowances.
