| Titles on the line in Easter games | |

By HENRY MORABANG SOCCER and softball are the major sporting events take place in Port Moresby during the Easter weekend. TOther national events taking place in the nation’s capital and elsewhere are the Ipatas Cup rugby league competition in Wabag, the Morobe regional soccer challenge in Wau, and the women’s bowls tournament in neighbouring Bulolo. Most other sports have either postponed their national championships to or planned them for the Queen’s Birthday weekend in June. The weekend sporting feast in Port Moresby starts tomorrow with the National Softball Championships, both men and women, at the Bisini softball grounds Defending champions Madang Kings (men) and Lae Gold (women) are tipped to retain their respective titles (Details, page 47). In soccer, the Telikom-sponsored National Soccer League grand final will be played between Gelle Hills and Hekari United while Morobe Kumuls and INSPAC Rapatona will play for third and fourth places on Saturday at the Lloyd Robson Oval (Details, page 45). The Morobe regional soccer challenge, despite last minute money hiccup is set to kick off tomorrow in Wau while in Bulolo the oldest bowling club in the country will host the two women’s bowls tournament, also starting tomorrow. The two tournaments are the masters singles (champion of champions) and the national pairs title. National president Geua Tau said yesterday it was an honour for Bulolo to host this tournament and she wants all clubs to take turns in hosting national tournaments. Visiting bowlers from Lae, Goroka, Mount Hagen, Madang, Defence (Port Moresby) are expected to compete with Bulolo. In Wabag, the Ipatas Cup is set to roll tomorrow when all the teams arrive today in Wabag, Enga province. Ipatas Cup’s chief executive officer Timothy Lepa said yesterday that more then 24 teams have confirmed their participation. They include POM City Rangers, Lae Brothers, Morobe Tambuaks, Goroka United, Kainantu Ants, Kundiawa Tarangau, Hagen Sharks, Mendi Naikos, Mendi Tigers, Mendi Menjils, Tari Panthers, Minj Raiders, Porgera Nuggets, Laiagam Muli Rangers, Wabag Tambuaks, Wabag Tarangau, Madang Diwai, POM City Mioks, Ialibu Storms and Goroka Royals. Enga Governor Peter Ipatas has committed K40,000 in prize money. |
