| Poreporena looking for third straight cricket win | |
|
By PETER PUSAL AMINI Park on Saturday will be the scene of the Port Moresby A Grade Cricket grand final between Hanuabada brother teams BNG Poreporena and Stop n Shop United. This will be Poreporena’s third successive finals appearance and the traditional rivalry between the two teams is no less impressive with United being on the losing end in last year’s final against the John Ovia-led team. Both teams have been in dominant form in last weeks semi-finals recording wins with United’s five wicket demolition of KCC perhaps not quite the tough batting hit out they needed going into the season’s decider. Poreporena on the other hand will be feeling quietly confident heading into the final with a record to boast and more importantly players with big match experience. They handled a difficult Raukele side in last week’s play-off and will be better for the effort. United boast a selection of representative players in Captain and PNG leader Rarua Dikana, Under 19 reps Arua Dikana and Lou Gavera and United stalwart Kohu Dai to challenge a consistent Poreporena. For Poreporena their three pronged pace attack is the key with Haoda brothers John and Raymond Jr supporting Under 19 linchpin Lou Gavera expected to trouble United batsmen especially after their quick if not shaky win over KCC last week. BNG Captain John Ovia holds his team’s hopes with the willow and a lot is expected of the batting mainstay in what will definitely be a tightly contested affair. Every run will count and Ovia is due for a significant innings. The final will start earlier (9.30am) as a contingency against rain and a large parochial crowd is expected to see an enthralling contest in the Hanuabada local derby. |
