Highway ‘lakes’ form in Aviamp

By JAMES APA GUMUNO
THE section of the Highlands Highway at Aviamp in the Western Highlands province has deteriorated and become virtually impassable but the Works Department says there is no money to fix it.
Motorists, business houses and mining operations in the Enga and Southern Highlands provinces are likely to suffer if the section is left unattended.
As of last Sunday, big trucks transporting goods and heavy machineries from Lae into parts of Western Highlands, Enga and Southern Highlands provinces were having difficulties getting through the area.
Only the light vehicles managed to pass through two mini-lakes forming on that part of the highway.
The Works Department in Mt Hagen said yesterday that the problem was likely to last for some time because they didn’t have the money to repair the road.
A senior official from the Works Department told The National that since February, they had asked for money to upgrade the area but had received no response.
The official said last week they dumped two truck loads of gravel to level off the lakes but this had not helped.
He said that they needed to carry out major work on the road to allow the traffic to flow freely.
