Government ignorant, arms build up

By JAMES APA GUMUNO
THE build up of firearms in the Highlands region is incredible and the warlords are gearing up for the national election, the Parliamentary Committee on Law and Order was told in Kundiawa town.
Simbu Chamber of Commerce and Industry president Joe Mek Teine told the committee last Friday the Government was not serious about addressing the guns related law and order problems.
“If we don’t control guns, we are going to have a failed election in the Highlands regions,” Mr Mek Teine said.
He told committee chairman and Laiagam-Porgera MP, Kappa Yarka, his deputy and Kombiam-Ambum MP Dickson Maki and the committee that the Government was aware of the build up of firearms and ammunition in the region but turned a blind eye on the issue.
He said the warlords in the region were taking advantage of the Government’s ignorance by building up arms for the election.
Mr Mek Teine said the National Guns Committee, after the road show, made some recommendations to the Government on the guns issue but it had failed to implement the recommendations.
But he said he did not support the bid to delay the elections and extend the life of this Parliament because the Government had been given ample time to address this problem but had failed.
