Candidates slam bid to extend parliament

Candidates in Goroka, Eastern Highlands province have slammed the bid to extend the life of the current Parliament by another 12 months yesterday.
They described the attempt as the work of desperate and self-interested politicians with no regard for the people and the Constitution.
Intending candidate for the Sinasina Yongumugl seat in Simbu province Mili Kiage said the Government had already wasted large amounts of money in establishing the National Guns Committee and its report was tugged away awaiting implementation.
Mr Kiage said the arms build up in the Highlands and fears of violence should not be used as an excuse to extend or defer the elections.
He said time had already run out and the nation was already experiencing the election fever, it was late to extend the Parliament or delay the elections.
“The bid by Kappa Yarka is impossible as the constitution needed to be amended, there is not enough time for the Parliament to make the amendment,” Mr Kiage said.
