Wanted: More names for SP Sports Awards

By WENDY KATUSELE
PNG Sports Federation secretary-general Sir John Dawanincura (right) has called on national sports federations to co-operate and nominate their outstanding athletes, teams or administrators for the 2007 SP Sports Awards.
Sir John said nominations had been poor since the launching of the annual event on January 27.
“Nominations have been received by the organising committee but that they are not enough,” he said and expressed his concern that national sports federations were not doing participating by sending in their nominations.
The annual awards night, usually held in Port Moresby, will be on May 26.
This year major sponsors and SP Brewery company have injected an additional K11,000 towards the sponsorship package for prizemoney alone. This is a total of K45,500 - a 30% increase compared with last year.
The increase sponsorship means that the 13 awards categories, except for the newly introduced national performance award, would receive an additional K500. The gold category winners will receive K4,500, the silver winner gets K3,000 and the bronze winner gets K2,000.
At close of business last Friday, the PNG Sports Federation had received 27 nominations for the various SP Awards, but the organising committee had anticipated far more, especially if all the sports federations have sent in nominations.
Said Sir John: “The SP Sports Awards are recognized as among the best in the South Pacific region. We therefore need to maintain its prestigious status and, most importantly, we need to acknowledge the many sportsmen and women’s sporting achievements in 2006 at the national and international levels”.
The Awards nominations close in two weeks time but Sir John is reminding provincial sports offices, district sports offices, mining towns and the public to assist in nominating sporting figures who they believe had excelled in their respective sports in the past 12 months.
“We have worked hard with major sponsor SP Brewery to make this year’s awards presentation even bigger and better with the increase in prizemoney, and the addition of the new category the national performance award,” Sir John said.
The SP Sports Awards nominations close March 30.
