| Black-out mars Easter | |
|
AN 18-hour black-out that
stretched from Sunday morning until after midnight marred and an
otherwise mellow Easter weekend in Lae. In some parts of the city, the blackout was for more than eight hours but in areas including the Buimo Rd. residents were without electricity from Sunday 8am until early Monday morning. PNG Power offered no explanation. The effect of the blackout left many residents without water until yesterday morning. Easter in Lae was celebrated with the Roman Catholics staging the Stations of the Cross around the city and the Lutherans celebrating in churches across the Morobean capital on Good Friday. Many welcomed the opportunity to have family get-togethers or just to rest from their busy daily routines at work. Sporting venues including the Lae Rugby League ground and the LFA park were without the usual high number of spectators at the games. Most markets and shops were closed on Good Friday, Sunday, and yesterday. The areas involved in last weekend’s violence were noticeably devoid of activity. The police, who had given strong signals of a major operation during Easter, were seen at the Lae Central police station attending to normal routine duties. The metropolitan superintendent’s office said the scheduled afternoon media conference yesterday was deferred because it was a public holiday. |
