Bronze for Ryan Pini
SWIMMING sensation Ryan Pini won the bronze medal 50m butterfly in the Telstra Australian Swimming Championship held at Sydney Olympic Park Aquatic Centre on Saturday.
Pini swam a personal best and also PNG Open record in a time of 23.96 behind Andrew Lauterstein in a time of 23.61 (silver) and Mathew Targett who won the gold in a time of 23.51.
The previous PNG record set by Pini was 24.01
According to Elizabeth Wells, it was an extraordinary night of record breaking performance and personal best for PNG champion after coming out of a virus infection.
“I always want to get out there and do a PB,” Pini said. “I’ve set myself goals to better myself after slowly recovering from a virus infection since returning from the ‘Beijing Good Luck Games’ due to the fluctuating temperature changes experienced.” The next event for Pini is the 100m freestyle today
Pini said his main goal was to keep improving on the times in his qualified events for his second Olympic Games and swim fast times along the way.

Four in Ipatas Cup finals
FOUR teams are confirmed for the finals of the Ipatas Cup rugby league challenge to be played this weekend at Johnson Siki Oval in Wabag, Enga province.
The four finalists were the winners of each pool, following the round robin matches played during the Easter long weekend.
The winners were Wabag Tabuaks (pool 1), Giluwe Tigers (pool 2), Kompiam Sharks (pool 3), and Mendi Menjals (pool 4).
Ipatas Cup chief executive officer Timothy Lepa said from Mout Hagen last night that these winners will vie for the K20,000 prize money and the Cup while the runner-up collects K10,000.
The third place-getter will grab K5,000 while the fourth place-getter will walk away with K2,000.
Lepa said over 16 teams took part in the Easter weekend round robin series. This is the first time, all the teams played in one centre to determine the winner of the Coca Cola sponsored Cup.
Lepa said the patron and Enga Governor Peter Ipatas was happy with the outcome of the tournament at Johnson Siki Oval.
According to organisers, this weekend will see Kompiam Sharks take on Wabag Tambuaks while Giluwe Tigers take on Mendi Menjals.
