Lack of jobs a major problem

I FULLY support Kila Mali’s comments that the National Government is not doing enough to attract new investments.
While politicians may appease parents and guardians by pledging school subsidies this year and beyond, we must ask whether there will be jobs for them when they leave the classroom or vocational training.
I believe the lack of job opportunities is the biggest problem facing the National Government, which sadly is not being addressed.
Apart from amending the Goods and Services Tax Act, the Government should:
*Spend more money on improving and building roads, bridges, wharves and other infrastructure to promote business development;
*Spend more money to address law and order problems; and
*Come up with new strategies to strengthen existing and new PNG-owned businesses and ventures through various Government departments and banks.
Our political leaders should be more creative and also co-ordinate their planning and implementation of development programmes with appropriate agencies for more planned and coordinated development.
In Lae, for example, a good number of companies have packed up and left.
People are generally reluctant to do business in Lae because of poor road conditions, increasing law and order problems and deteriorating public services.
While it is good to commit K1.5 million for school fees, Morobe Governor Luther Wenge should also commit funds to address the law and order situation, ethnic problems, settlements and poor road conditions as only then will our children have some hope of securing employment.
