Lae hit by string of armed robberies

By PETER MIVA
LAE city was hit by a string of armed robberies last week, including the foiled attempted robbery on the RH Wholesale.
The Pelgens Supermarket in Chinatown, Lae, was robbed of K17,853.27 in cash on March 17 by youths armed with two home-made guns and bush knives.
Metropolitan commander Chief Supt Simon Kauba said an employee of the supermarket was driving out at Chinatown with the day’s takings in a vehicle when armed criminals held him up and took the money bag.
In another incident, the Ten-Mile service station was robbed of K6,584 in cash by armed criminals last Monday morning.
Mr Kauba said the unknown suspects, armed with home-made guns, entered the service station store, held up the store manager and took the money. The suspects then fled into the bushes.
A 35-year-old woman was robbed of K520 in cash and other personal items worth K670 along Boundary Road.
Mr Kauba said seven suspects armed with two home-made guns, two bush knives and stones held up the victim in her vehicle outside the Church of Christ and demanded the keys to the vehicle but she refused.
The suspects then stole her bilum containing a passbook, two bank cards, a mobile phone and a cheque book before escaping on foot. A police task force unit gave chase and arrested one suspect.
Mr Kauba also said the owner of Stephen’s Trading, John Stephen, was also held up by four armed suspects along the Milfordhaven Road in Lae.
The suspects stole his vehicle but police later recovered it in good condition at the Two-Mile settlement.
Mr Kauba said police were investigating all the armed robberies.
