Man gets four years for stealing vehicle

A 38-YEAR-old man from Buakap, Salamaua, Morobe province, was sentenced by the National Court in Lae last Monday to four years in jail with hard labour for stealing a motor vehicle to help get his wife to the hospital.
Justice Sao Gabi made the ruling after Angua Bukwa pleaded guilty and told the court that he was sorry but he wanted the money to take his wife to Kudjip hospital in Western Highlands.
The court heard that Bukwa’s family was unable to help him and he committed the crime out of frustration.
Bukwa told the court that a former employee of Lae Packaging Industries gave the key number of the vehicle to a person who in turn gave it to Bukwa.
The court heard that Bukwa than gave the key number to another person who cut a key for him for K40.
The court heard that last April 27, while the vehicle was parked outside the ANZ bank, the prisoner drove it away to the West Tarak river bank using the duplicate key.
The court heard that Bukwa and one Rocky Allan stripped the vehicle and sold almost all its parts, except the chassis.
The vehicle was worth K22,000 and belonged to Lae Packaging Industries Ltd.
The court heard that the prisoner had a prior conviction for stealing in 1990 and spent two years on probation.
The court heard that in that case, he used the name Jack Angua, but in this case he used the name Angua Bukwa.
A pre-sentence report from the Community-Based Corrections office showed that the prisoner was unable to pay money to replace the vehicle and recommended custodial sentence because he was not a first time offender .
