United Nations marks women’s rights day

THE United Nations has adopted a resolution proclaiming a United Nations Day for Women’s Rights to be observed on March 8 every year.
The International Women’s Day is observed on March 8 with different themes each year.
This year’s theme for National Women’s Day in Papua New Guinea was “Ending Impunity for Violence against Women and Girls”, which was taken from the International Women’s Day theme.
Meanwhile, Enga Governor Peter Ipatas has given K50,000 to the National Council of Women in recognition for the development of women throughout the country.
“When women become leaders, there is good governance.
“That is why the Enga provincial government has assisted the NCW,” Mr Ipatas said.
National Women’s Council president Scholla Warai said there must be an end to all forms of violence against women, girls, children and every citizen.
The council extended its appreciation to Prime Minister Sir Michael Somare for recognising the rights of women by passing the bill through the National Executive Council in 1975.
