Cop suspended for
possessing porn disks
By ELIZABETH VUVU
A MEMBER of the police mobile unit in East New Britain has been
suspended from duties following his alleged possession of pornographic
material.
Alphonse Leba, 33, of Wairiki No 4 in the Toma area, an inspector based
at the Tomaringa Barracks appeared before the Kokopo District Court last
Thursday morning to answer to charges by police for allegedly being in
the possession of pornographic items.
The court heard that between Nov 1, 2006, and March 5, Leba had in his
possessions two floppy discs containing pornographic images produced
locally and overseas.
During that period, the court heard that Leba had forced his wife to
view the images so as to stimulate her.
The court heard that the wife was unable to tolerate it anymore, and his
absence took the floppy discs to the provincial police commander Supt
Allan Kundi where she reported the matter.
Mr Kundi then handed the matter over to the Kokopo Criminal
Investigations Department, which viewed the discs and conducted further
investigations.
There was sufficient evidence to arrest and charge Leba.
Leba denied the charge against him and the case has been adjourned to
April 12 but he is out on bail on his own recognition and in the
meantime suspended from official duties.
Meanwhile, Leba is reportedly the second person this year to be charged
with possessing locally-produced pornography material.
The first person was Starick Tade, 31, from Raburua village in Kokopo,
who was found guilty by the Kokopo District Court for having in his
possessions two locally-produced pornographic video discs.
He pleaded guilty to the charge and was fined K400.
Police are investigating locally-produced pornography.
