Claims against Powi dismissal misleading

CLAIMS by Southern Highlands Governor Hami Yawari that his provincial executive council has revoked the appointment of William Powi as acting provincial administrator are misleading.
Department of Personnel Management Secretary Margaret Elias said since Mr Powi was appointed by the National Executive Council, only the NEC could revoke its own appointment.
“The Southern Highlands provincial executive council can recommend to the Public Services Commission for the appointment to be revoked, and the PSC, through the Minister for Public Service matters, will, in turn, take it up with the NEC to consider such recommendation.
“It is not proper for the Governor to announce publicly that his provincial cabinet has rescinded the acting appointment that was duly made by the appointing authority, which in this case is the NEC.
“Mr Powi is a public servant and should be left to perform his duties until such time when his appointment is nullified by the proper authority,” Ms Elias said.
