Five in Lae robbery charged

LAE CITY police have charged three suspects with one count of attempted robbery, one count of armed robbery and one count of illegal use of vehicle over the foiled robbery attempt in the city last week that resulted in the shooting death of one of the suspects.
Metropolitan commander Chief Superintendent Simon Kauba said two of the suspects also shot in the thighs were still in hospital and are expected to be charged once they were released.
George Norman Leni, 28, from East Sepik province and Kimaru Peter, 21, from Madang province, are still receiving treatment at the Angau Memorial General Hospital.
Mr Kauba said the three suspects charged on Friday were Chris Tahu, 23, and Sakare Milipi, 25, both from Morobe province and Rocky Mali, 26, from East Sepik province.
He said that police were still questioning them for their involvement in other crimes and were expected to charge them separately for these alleged crimes.
Meanwhile, criminals armed with home made guns, bush knives and stones held up an employee of the Nationwide Catering Services and robbed him of K500 in cash along the Butibam road last Wednesday morning.
Mr Kauba said the victim reported the matter to police who arrived at the scene but the suspects had fled.
He said police were also investigating the alleged theft of K1,820 in cash from the Smorgan Steel Co office at Kisere street last Wednesday.
Mr Kauba said that unknown persons gained entry into the office.
