Women urged to work for their sector’s advocacies

A PROMINENT lady lawyer has urged women in the law and justice sector to look towards the future and fully realise their roles and responsibilities as the women sector celebrated the International Women’s Day.
Lands Title Commissioner Josepha Kanawi Kiris told women who gathered at the Hideaway Hotel in Port Moresby that realising their ability to make small changes was crucial in producing results.
She reminded the women sector regarding the challenges their generation faced in pushing for legislation, advocacy and flagging women issues in the country.
Ms Kiris said women’s rights were often belittled and regarded as domestic issues when in fact, they deserved to be promulgated in the rights avenues.
Citing her previous role as chairperson of the Law Reform Commission, she said it was the struggle and awareness that was the catalyst in promoting these rights.
“We still have a lot of work to do and must continue to do it. We have started these efforts and we need to ensure we are being heard.
“It is a long process, that is why we need to think long term,” Ms Kiris said.
She also said the approaches should also change to give a chance for women’s please to be heard.
Ms Kiris said the women should also look beyond their confines so that they are not only attuned to the changes around them, but to also see how they fit in the push for more recognition.
Sector women who participated at the National Women’s Day event said they were now refocused on their individual roles.
“It is a great opportunity to see ourselves with others … we often work in isolation and this opportunity had assisted us and examined where we all are,” Sergeant Joyce Niningi of the Correction Services, said.
