Hagen traders warned: Dont just hire guards

By JAMES APA  GUMUNO
MOUNT Hagen businesses houses have been urged to properly check the background of people they wanted to employ as security guards and to consult with police before hiring them.
Metropolitan commander Chief Superintendent Theodore Muriki made this call after a restaurant lost thousands of kina in cash and goods to one of its own security guards.
Police say a security guard employed by Food Court restaurant in Mount Hagen city allegedly walked away with K18,000 in cash, telecards worth K1,000 and mobile phone pre-paid cards worth K1,000 last week.
The suspect also allegedly stole cigarettes worth hundreds of kina.
He was believed to be hiding in his village.
Mr Muriki said that it was not the first time such theft occurred in the shops involving security guards employed by the stores.
He said in the past many business houses in the city lost substantial amount of money and goods to their own security guards.
