Telikom Board sacked Waterhouse, say sources

HIGH level sources have disclosed that the Telikom PNG Board terminated David Waterhouse as chief executive of Telikom because of concerns over his overall performance.
They said the decision had nothing to do with pressures from trade unions and was related to questions of performance and goal setting for the state-owned enterprise.
The sources said the board had not been convinced that the massive K1.5 billion investment programme proposed by Mr Waterhouse had merit.
There were also concerns about other strategic and management issues, including a plan to accelerate the ownership of a million mobile phones in the country.
It is understood the chief executive position will be advertised soon, and the board may be leaning towards the idea of retaining a PNG national in this position.
However, some consideration is being given to the creation of a position for a chief operating officer, under the CEO, with the position possibly filled by an expatriate with the requisite technical and other skills.
The chairman of the Independent Public Business Corporation Sumasy Singin told the 23rd Australia PNG Business Forum in Cairns that all State-owned enterprises such as Telikom PNG, PNG Power, PNG Ports Limited, formerly PNG Harbours Board and PNG Post have experienced improved operating performances in recent years and were now profitable.
He also announced that the Government would soon be formalising its information technology policy.
