Telikom sees red over cable thefts

THE acting chief executive officer of Telikom Peter Loko has called for zero tolerance for criminals and entities who do not have any regard for public assets and State property.
Mr Loko was reacting to extensive damage done to the telecommunication cables at Gerehu in the nation’s capital. Criminals cut the cables last Friday night.
“This is an act of sabotage and anyone encouraging and promoting it should be punished; this includes people who trade in stolen goods,” Mr Loko said.
The damage partially affected international calls through the satellite system, mobile and other services to areas such as Manus, Daru, East New Britain and other satellite dependent areas. Although most services were restored at 10pm on Saturday, more work still needs to be done to fully restore services.
Mr Loko said Telikom was offering a K10,000 reward leading to the successful prosecution of person or persons who vandalise the telecommunications cables.
He also urged city authorities to revoke licences and permits of dealers trading in stolen goods.
“Customers in parts of Tokarara, Gerehu and Morata are still waiting for their services to be connected for up to 12 months. Unfortunately, criminals in those areas continue to vandalise and steal cables and it is becoming futile and frustrating to keep replacing the cables only to have them vandalised a few days later,” Mr Loko said.
