MP implicated in attempted rape

By SHEILA LASIBORI
A MEMBER of Parliament has been implicated in an alleged rape attempt in a hotel room in Port Moresby.
The MP (named) from Oro province was alleged to have tried to rape a young woman (named) after she was allegedly lured to meet the MP by another woman (named).
NCD/Central police Commander Alfred Reu last Friday confirmed that a complaint was filed with police and that he had directed Metropolitan Superintendent Mark Kanawi to assign officers to look into the veracity of the allegations before they could take any further action.
The alleged rape attempt took place on March 13 at midday when the MP and the young woman, believed to be in her early 20s, went to the said hotel (named).
Police said they had obtained statements from the young woman and the other woman and were continuing investigations, which will be the basis for questioning the suspect.
In an occurrence book (OB No.2256/2007) entry, it was reported that the woman told the young woman that the MP would help her pay her school fees and so she went with the woman to meet the MP.
“She had problems paying up school fees,” police said.
When the woman and the young woman met the MP, he had allegedly told them the young woman and he would meet an Asian (nationality named) man regarding the money to pay the young woman’s school fees.
But instead, it was alleged that the MP drove the young woman to the hotel and proceeded to a room where he allegedly made several advances to touch her sexually but she refused and fended him off.
The MP allowed the woman to flee his room.
The sexual offences squad was dealing with the report which had been registered as crime report No. 742 of 2007.
“There was another woman who was behind this (attempted rape) and we are trying to get this woman,” police investigators said.
It was reported that the woman who allegedly lured the girl to the MP also resides with the girl and her family in the city.
